Wonder & Wander
Flags

I really enjoy a good flag. It is an easy way to identify, brand, and in rare cases scare the bejeezus out of people. There is a reason that people burn a country’s flag and that is because symbols matter. Here are a few of my favourites in no particular order.

The Gadsen Flag is simple and clear. Unfortunately the crazy right tends to waive it around when the whole democracy thing doesn’t work in their favour but you can’t blame the flag for being cool.

Mozambique got straight to the point. Books to stress the power of knowledge and an AK-47 to say that if encyclopedias don’t work out we will shoot our enemies in the face.

The North Caucasian Emirate only lasted from 1918-1920 but I bet it was a really happy time to be alive.

No offense to Ryazan Oblast or Penza Oblast but Yaroslavl Oblast has a bear with an axe. That is why you don’t attack Russia in winter. If we could get Florida to change their flag to a shark with a harpoon gun then maybe the hurricanes would go elsewhere.

Sicily has had this flag for 700+ years but I don’t get the Medusa three legged centerpeice. I would never go against a Sicilian when death is on the line but I would ask for an explanation.
